As a first time mum, you struggle with some things which you assumed would come naturally to you. However, when it comes to leaving the house with a baby, there are two types of women.
Those that under-pack and those that carry too much.
I do the latter. My husband was always making fun if me asking if I am planning to run away with the baby. Well, from my little experience, I am here to tell you of the dos and don’ts of packing for the baby for a day out.
First and most important, get a good bag. Comfortable, good size and of good quality. Remember cheap is expensive. If you get a cheap bag, chances are it will wear out very fast and you will end up replacing it more often than you would like. Get yourself a good quality baby travel bag on baby rack for Ksh. 3,600 that will allow you to carry all your required items and at the same time acts as a sleeping bed: two for one making it perfect for any parent.
Nappies and clothes:
Number of diapers depends on the amount of time you will be out. I always had 7-10 as it is better to be safe than sorry.
Always have wipes. They are multi-purpose and I still use them up to date.
Changing mat.
Have at least 2-3 change of clothes. Accidents can happen.
Extra socks
Weather-appropriate accessories like a hat and/or mittens
Two blankets — heavy and/or lightweight, depending on the season
Bag(s) for soiled clothes and diapers/nappies.
Comfort items:
My baby loves her dolls and we never leave the house without at least one of them. Depending on the age of the baby, this could be a shaker, stuffed animal or anything that brings them comfort and keep them busy. Pacifiers could also work if the baby uses one.
Feeding:
For formula-fed babies:
Bottles
Cans or packets of formula
Water if using powdered or concentrated formula
For breastfed babies:
A blanket or cloth to cover you (if you so desire) for public feeding sessions
Two to three bibs
One or two burp cloths
Snacks and water for you
Carry a bottle of water if your baby is weaned off and a cup for it.
Baby products for safety and hygiene:
Nappy cream ointment
Petroleum jelly
Fever-reducer like baby Panadol (for baby’s one month and up)
Nasal aspirator and infant nasal spray
Cotton balls
Travel-size baby wash and lotion
Two or three washcloths
Baby sunblock
Hand sanitiser for yourself.
An emergency card with contact information
Those are the most essential items in my baby’s bag. Anything special you carry in your bag? Feel free to leave suggestions in the comment section.
